Monthly guide to woodland wildlife

March

On warm sunny days the first butterflies emerge from hibernation: brimstone, peacock and tortoiseshell.

Look out for the first queen bumblebees: buff tail, white tail, red tail and carder bees.

Listen for song thrush or mistle thrush singing and the quiet trilling of dunnocks.

Celandines are flowering under hedgerows and it is a good time to look at the swelling buds of trees and shrubs.
