Environment Groups Conference

7th October 2006

Two Leafield Community Woodland representatives were able to attend the 2006 Oxfordshire Local Environment Groups Conference in Kidlington and enjoyed workshops on bird identification, scrub management for wildlife, mammals and microscopy.

Phillipa Burrell of TVERC kindly made time to look at our plaster of paris mammal footprint casts, prepared in the Community Woodland in spring and summer 2006. Not surprisingly, we misidentified some prints but we have casts from fallow or roe deer, rabbit, stoat, fox, badger, dog, and domestic cat.

She identified the toothmarks on a gnawed bird bone, found at the Community Woodland in April 2006, as having been made by a rat.

She also offered some suggestions to help us record very small mammal prints this autumn, using soot, mud and aluminium foil.
