After a stormy day, the sky cleared just in time for another interesting and enjoyable Bat Night with John Woolliams and his bat detector.
18 adults and children gathered at the Community Woodland where a spectacular display by a soprano pipistrelle provided an impressive start to the evening. The bat swooped low over the glade, easily visible against a twilit sky and its characteristic cries (slightly higher in pitch than those of the common pipistrelle) were heard as the bat detector decreased their frequency to an audible range.
As it grew dark, it became more difficult to see the bats but other pipistrelles were heard at the view point for the Tump and near the large ash tree by the gate.
Many thanks to John Woolliams for a chance to hear and learn about Leafield Woodland's bat community, on a beautiful clear evening, lit by torches and the stars.
